The Odessa Fire Department provides Emergency Medical Services for Ector County with a staff of 173 professionals. Of these, there are 23 emergency care attendants, 31 emergency medical technicians, 67 paramedics and 36 licensed paramedics.
The Department is also utilizing portable ultrasound monitors on our ambulances. The monitors have provided valuable pre-hospital assessment information to the paramedics and emergency room staff. The OFD was recognized at the First World Congress on Ultrasound held in Milan, Italy in 2005 for having the first paramedic ultrasound program in the world. The Odessa Fire Department is currently participating in a nationally recognized study for ultrasound use in the pre-hospital setting.
Ambulances were recently equipped with new EKG monitors with 12 lead capability, which allows EMTs to fax these diagnostic quality tracings to the destination hospital for review by the Emergency Department Physician or Cardiologist. The City currently operate seven Mobile Intensive Care Unit ambulances and eight Advanced Life Support (ALS) fire engines.
